Observatory - University Park Neighborhood

This University Park neighborhood offers the charm of a college town, the convenience of a central location, and the serenity of a traditional neighborhood where a variety of beautiful historic homes and mature shade trees line picturesque streets. Observatory Park is reminiscent of a bygone era when time seemed to pass more slowly, and neighbors visited from their front porches on warm summer evenings. The University of Denver (DU) and Iliff School of Theology were founded downtown in 1864 by John Evans, the second territorial governor of Colorado, who moved to the University/Observatory Park neighborhood in1880.

Observatory Park’s primary attraction is the 1894 Romanesque-style Chamberlin Observatory, which hosts public stargazing events and is surrounded by a large neighborhood park. Additional green spaces include Prairie Park with a walking trail, and McWilliams Park, popular for its playground with a purple dinosaur. Shopping plazas and casual eateries border the district.
